IREX Traffic Module: AI Detection for Overtaking Violations Rolled Out
The IREX Traffic module now tells an overtaking maneuver apart from a plain opposite-lane entry, recording Overtaking only when a second, speeding vehicle is detected in a linked speed-control zone.
MURRIETA, CA – IREX, a global leader in ethical AI and intelligent monitoring based in the U.S., has rolled out a new overtaking violation detection feature for its Traffic module.

Crossing a median line to overtake another vehicle can quickly create a serious risk for everyone on the road. The Traffic module simplifies the detection of this violation through video analytics.
The IREX Traffic module already detected vehicles driving into the opposite lane. Now the system can distinguish between two related but different situations: a vehicle driving into the opposite lane, and a vehicle overtaking another vehicle in that lane. The distinction depends on what the driver does after crossing the signal line.
Two Violations, Two Scenarios
Driving into the opposite lane means that a vehicle enters the lane intended for traffic moving in the other direction. The system records this violation when the vehicle crosses the signal line against the permitted direction, whether or not the vehicle is passing another vehicle.
An Overtaking violation is more specific. It is recorded when a vehicle crosses into the opposite lane to overtake another vehicle, while that other vehicle is traveling above the configured speed limit in a linked speed-control zone. In this case, the system must detect both the vehicle making the maneuver and the vehicle being overtaken.
The two violations may begin with the same action: a vehicle crosses into the opposite lane. The difference is what the system detects around that action.
| Violation | What the system checks |
|---|---|
| Driving into the opposite lane | A vehicle crosses the signal line in the wrong direction and enters the oncoming lane |
| Overtaking | A vehicle enters the opposite lane while passing another vehicle detected in a linked speed-control zone |
This distinction helps operators understand what happened and review the correct type of traffic event.
How the IREX System Detects Overtaking
The platform analyzes video footage from cameras configured for a specific road object and records an overtaking violation only when all required conditions are met:
- A vehicle crosses the designated signal line against the allowed flow of traffic
- The vehicle enters the opposite lane
- Another vehicle is detected in the linked speed-control zone
- That vehicle is traveling above the configured speed limit
- The events occur within the configured time interval
- The Record Overtaking violations option is enabled in the violation rules
An overtaking violation can only be recorded when all of these criteria are configured in the rules.

This means the system does not classify every entry into the opposite lane as overtaking. It looks for evidence that the maneuver involved passing another vehicle.
Review Every Recorded Event
Operators can search specifically for overtaking events, review the available snapshots and video footage, and confirm how the maneuver occurred.
The result is a more complete picture of traffic behavior: not only whether a vehicle entered the opposite lane, but also whether it did so while overtaking another vehicle.
The IREX video management platform continuously supports road safety and compliance by using advanced AI analytics to spot dangerous driving behaviors. Through accurate detection of various traffic violations, IREX empowers traffic enforcement authorities to streamline event reviews, boost driver accountability, and significantly improve overall road safety.
