Alexandria, VA - July 26, 2021 – IREX announced today that it has started a pilot project with its new AI-powered weapon detector in one of the world's largest cities. With the new weapon detector, IREX allows cities to combat 21st-century problems such as mass shootings in schools, rising crime rates, and much more.
The weapon detector analyzes video streams from city cameras and recognizes different types of weapons pulled out or carried by bad actors. IREX has used thousands of firearm images including handguns and rifles to train the deep neural network.
Unlike acoustic gunshot detectors, the IREX video analytics can spot a weapon before it fires to prevent injuries or death. The IREX Smart City Platform sends real-time alerts to a local police department and automatically locks doors by interacting with access control systems.
The IREX weapon detector is designed to work in public spaces such as schools, transport hubs, banks, and critical infrastructure delivering an extremely low rate of false alerts. The detector works on most existing cameras in cities minimizing the deployment cost. No additional hardware needs to be installed on-premises.
