Updated Traffic Module: Now Featuring Dedicated Motorbike Detection

2026-06-20 23:56 Updates
MURRIETA, CA - IREX, a global leader in Ethical AI and intelligent monitoring based in USA, has released an updated vehicle classifier. The Traffic Module in version 4.37 has now expanded from 6 categories to 9. Motorbikes are now recognized as a dedicated vehicle type across all vehicle detection modes, including Vehicle Tracking and Vehicle Tracking with License Plate Recognition.
This update enables more accurate detection in mixed traffic and removes ambiguity between motorbikes, bicycles and other compact vehicles.
The updated vehicle classifier adds new options for monitoring motorbike-specific violations.

Recognition and detection

Motorbikes are no longer a marginal category in traffic analytics. In many cities, they are one of the fastest-growing vehicle types, especially in dense urban areas. Yet, they are still underrepresented in traditional detection models, leading to gaps in monitoring, safety analysis, and enforcement. This update closes the gap.
The updated Traffic Module introduces dedicated motorbike classification and detection. The system now distinguishes motorbikes from cars, bicycles and scooters with higher precision, even in complex scenes such as intersections, mixed traffic and low-light conditions. It also improves tracking stability, which is critical for counting, trajectory analysis and incident review.
Once a vehicle is identified as a motorbike, additional analysis becomes available. The system now detects:
  • the number of motorbikes
  • whether the rider is wearing a helmet
This logic ensures that helmet detection only runs when relevant, improving both accuracy and processing efficiency.

Built for real road conditions

Motorbikes behave differently from other vehicles: they accelerate faster, change lanes unpredictably, and often move between lanes. The updated model is trained to handle these patterns, reducing missed detections and false classifications.
This means more reliable data for:
  • traffic flow analysis
  • safety monitoring
  • policy and infrastructure planning

How it works in practice

To activate this feature, users can enable the option License plate and helmet detection for motorbikes. The classifier is designed to integrate into existing workflows without requiring changes to camera setups or processing pipelines.
Motorbike equipment detection is supported across all vehicle recognition modes, making it consistent regardless of deployment scenario.

Why it matters for safety and analytics

Motorbikes present specific safety challenges and are often underrepresented in traffic data. With this update, operators gain access to more precise insights into motorbike presence and rider compliance.
This supports better-informed decisions in traffic monitoring, safety analysis, and urban planning based on data that reflects real road conditions.
Accurate motorbike detection directly impacts risk assessment. Motorbikers are among the most vulnerable road users, and incomplete data leads to blind spots in safety strategies. With this update, operators can better understand near-miss situations, speed and movement patterns and high-risk zones involving motorbikes.
The motorbike update is fully integrated into the existing Traffic Module and requires no additional setup. It works with current camera infrastructure and supports both real-time and retrospective analysis.
