Peru Boosts Public Transport Safety with IREX Ethical AI

LIMA, Peru - The Peruvian Ministry of the Interior is integrating security cameras in public transport as part of their fight against crime and to improve overall safety. The push comes amid rising threats. Drivers from companies like Vipusa in Lima have faced recent attacks. While assaults are recorded outside the vehicles, robberies and acts of violence frequently occur inside the units. The video footage from the cameras provides law enforcement with investigative evidence and aids police patrols.
The IREX Ethical AI platform is targeted among security systems integrated in Peruvian public transport. As a case, the platform uses facial recognition to search for criminals and wanted individuals, including abducted children or vulnerable elderly people.
The Minister of the Interior met with transport reps at bus depots to roll out this program as part of the national Citizen Security and Crime-Fighting Plan to solve one of the biggest public safety problems in Peru.
It's the government's responsibility to improve citizen security, and that's where our commitment lies: to act decisively and improve criminal investigations. And that is why a national plan for citizen security and the crime-fighting plan 2026-2028 was introduced.
- Minister of the Interior of Peru, José Mercedes Zapata Morante

The overall strategy focuses on three objectives:

  1. Prevention
  2. Territorial control
  3. Strengthening criminal investigation, intelligence operations and criminal analysis.
The Ministry of the Interior is moving forward with connecting bus cameras to the C4 command center and the 105 emergency hotline. This will allow for the detection of criminals, the location of wanted individuals, and the activation of a panic button for an immediate response”.

The strategy is being implemented locally and nationally. Meetings have been held with transport companies, including Santa Catalina and El Rápido in Vipusa. The ATU (Autoridad de Transporte Urbano) and the National Police are also present, working to properly map routes for a comprehensive vision of crime prevention in Lima and at a national level.
